Rose Nolan is a visual artist who happily lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. For many years, Nolan has structured her practice according to several self-devised categories. These include Banners, Constructed Work, Flat Work, Homework and Word Work. These categories are fluid, allowing individual works to straddle any two or more of her classifications often accompanied by a shift in media and scale. Her work regularly oscillates between the discrete and the monumental and her choice of everyday materials and ways of working indicates respect for the ordinariness of life and the resilience of fragile individuality. Construction is both process and metaphor in her art: letters are combined into words, and words into banners, objects or images. Seemingly insignificant words or phrases are separated from the stream of continuous talk and given a fresh existence. She invites us into a new space of play between seeing and reading often merging vulnerability and bravado, self-doubt and affirmation.
