Del Kathryn Barton: Highway is a Disco
In The Highway is a Disco, Del Kathryn Barton eloquently describes the thrill of not explicitly “knowing” the meaning behind her artworks as “what arouses [her] every morning.” Through this de-emphasis on theoretical knowledge, Barton often favours a more intuitive approach to her art. She claims that “something interesting and powerful can come out of working with things you don’t understand.” Viewers are not expected to wrangle with a wordy conceptualisation of her work. Instead, like the artist, they can simply fall into a mystical dream of surreal figures, glistening breasts and kaleidoscopic colours.
