Catalysis III

1970, street performance, New York city

Adrian Piper “Catalysis III” In 1970, Adrian Piper covered her shirt with white paint, wrote “wet paint” on the front in black, and walked around New York City. Only Documentary photographs of this public performance remain.

Piper’s work examines ways in which race, gender and identity are treated in public. By designating a difference or an abnormality from others, by positioning herself as something that should be avoided, Piper provokes a response from the public and examines ways in which interactions with other people can define who we are.
