Tom Polo is a visual artist living and working in Sydney, Australia. His recent practice uses text, humour and extensions of portraiture to engage with a corrosive anxiety about the human condition. Through painting, performance and installation Polo explores contemporary society’s inherent desire for success and our continual expectation for something more.
Polo lives and works in Sydney. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at the College of Fine Arts, UNSW in 2006. In 2007 he was awarded a studio residency at Parramatta Artists Studios and held his first solo exhibition, An Excessive Aesthetic at Firstdraft Gallery, Sydney. Since then, Polo has exhibited in numerous exhibitions at Gallery 9 (2007), Campbelltown Arts Centre (2009), Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (2009), Grantpirrie (2011) and Gertrude Contemporary (2012). In 2011 he undertook the Australia Council for the Arts London Studio Residency and held his first international solo exhibition at Acme Project Space, London. He is a recent recipient of the Art and Australia/Credit Suisse Contemporary Art Award.
