The art multiple is understood to be a three-dimensional object that is intended to exist not as a unique work of art, but as an editioned original.  It is a simple extension of an artist’s one-off works or a way of exploring industrial techniques or a way of getting art into homes rather than galleries.  Some artists use the multiple as a defiance on a cultural or political level; others, simply a pragmatic desire to sell their wares.

The ‘Artcil’ is a project that explores and questions the artist multiple as a functional work of art.  The printed art slogan is editioned on a blunt pencil.  It can be celebrated as an editioned work of art; if sharpened by the patron, the edition is removed and becomes a functional pencil to be enjoyed.
